It was scary enough to give the Best Man speech at my buddy’s first wedding but 13 years later when he asked me to do it again at his second wedding I started asking “Why me Lord”. I mean when you’re in your early twenties and you’re asked to give a wedding speech you really don’t know what to fear. You can make a wreck of it and the excuse will just be chalked up to inexperience.
Maybe just as important is, in that first wedding most of the guests were in their early twenties as well. They’re young, having a good time and wrapped up in the idea of true love that lasts forever so regardless what you say they’ve already made up their minds that the couple is a perfect match and this is going to be a heck of a party.
Then this thing called life starts changing everyone’s idealism. Thirteen years later and it’s a much more mature crowd with not so many starry eyed idealists. Thirteen years later and you are speaking to a group that is going to be more critical. Sure they’re happy for the bride and groom but if you mention the word “forever” in your speech, you will have lost all credibility.
So how do you prepare for a second wedding speech for the Best Man?
Sit down with the Groom and ask him if he has anything specific he wants said. More likely he will have things that he specifically does not want said. If he has kids from the previous marriage is it ok to mention them or keep them out. If, and this happened once, the former spouse is now a good friend and attending the wedding, do you mention her?
What kind of wedding will it be? Often times second marriages are less conventional and more informal. Try giving a speech on a windy beach with no microphone and you’ll understand the importance of this.
How long should it be in terms of time?
How many people will be there?
If you don’t know the Bride, get a couple bits of information from the Groom or Maid of Honor that you can use in the speech.
Part of the duties of the Best Man is to toast the parents of the bride. Think back to the first wedding where your buddy fell in love with that nice Hungarian girl whose last name was Csizmazia. Well, I am not going so i cant really answer that question lol. but about 5 months before the wedding send a save the date magnet telling that you are getting married and the date that they can put on their fridge. About 3 months before the wedding send the invites telling about the ceremony, what to bring, wear, theme, etc, who is getting married, the date, the address and directions, a small message asking them to come, please make it clear on how they need to reply on whether they are coming or not and who of their spouse and children are coming. The whole kit and kaboodle. About 1 month before the wedding, call everyone who didn’t reply on whether they could come or not and ask them if they can come, and a week or two before the wedding( i would suggest a week) remind them of the wedding and that you are happy they are coming. So yeah!
2. If the reception is before the ceremony or early in the morning the next day, how about a day at the beach? And then maybe rent a banquet room in the hotel to have the breakfast, lunch or dinner (whichever meal is in the time period of the reception), and be sure to have snacks at the beach, and maybe also have a dance party in the room. As for activities, traditionally the father of the bride and the groom make speeches. and the best men, maid of honor, mother of the bride, and the bride make toasts.(mini speeches) You could play wedding games or dance or have a dance party. Also, there is a first dance with the bride and the groom, a father daughter dance between you and your father or a close father figure, a mother son dance between the groom and his mother, and then another groom and bride dance at the end
3. I would think whatever you would want. Indoors with a view is beautiful, but outside, they can be interactive with the water. I would love a reception on the beach, but if you ceremony is on the beach, you could consider indoor. Whatever you feel. THIS IS YOUR SPECIAL DAY! This day is all about you and your husband.
4. I would suggest maybe a sand ceremony during the wedding. You and your fiancee have containers of sand in each of your hands. Then you pour the sand at the same time into a vase or container as a symbol of you coming together, the sand can never be seperated the way it was before. you can put shells on the top and then seal it.
