wedding on a budget = / advice please!!?

My fiance and I are planning on getting married next year in may.
but we have lots of expenses. im still in school (not working) and he’s paying off lots of student loans. (he went to NYU) lol. and car, insurance, etc.
he’s working but he doesnt get paid enough to save for a $10,000 wedding. so our budget is of about $5,000.
we’re planning on having a beach ceremony cuz i heard its cheaper and plus I LOVE THAT IDEA = ) and i would love to have an outdoor ceremony as well. maybe in a garden.
we will be doing a lot of “do it yourself” like decorations, flowers, probably cake (idk if thats a good idea)
and i would love to get suggestions of where to buy stuff to decorate, where to get flowers, WHERE CAN I FIND A GARDEN THAT DOESNT COST $200 pp. (like the botanical garden) lol.
thank you = D
oh by the way. i live on long island NY.
i wouldnt mind driving to jersey or upstate for the garden venue.

I live in Queens and grew up and got married on Long Island, so I know how costly it can be to get married. Here are few tips:

* Cut your guest list. The number of guests you have is a big driver in the cost of a wedding. So, the smaller your guest list, the smaller your expense.
* You want outdoor, so think about possible outdoor places. Eisenhower Park is a possibility. You can also try the lighthouse at Robert Moses, which is where my cousin had her ceremony. Any State Park in the area will allow you to do it for a minimum amount. In addition, consider having your outdoor ceremony at the same place you are having your reception because most of them have beautiful outdoor areas for ceremonies. To name a few.
– Swan Club – right on the water with gorgeous gardens
– Riviera in Massapequa
– Crest Hollow Country Club
– Milleridge Inn and Cottage
– Bridgeview Yacht Club – right on the water
* Most venues will include your cake, so don’t sweat about making your own. I wouldn’t recommend it because it’s just added stress. In the event it doesn’t cosider either getting a small cutting cake with sheet cakes in the back to be served to guests (this cuts costs A LOT) or even something like cupcakes which can be bought at your local bakery or even grocery store for very little and taste very good.
* Save on flowers and only get what is in season. Roses are always affordable, but also look into seasonal flowers for the time you are getting married. I would also suggest heading over to Burton’s in Melville, which does fantastic flowers for a great low price. Burton’s also sells dresses, so you can also look there for your dress.
* The only decorating you really need to be doing are CP’s if they are not included. Don’t go overboard with things, otherwise, it’ll look more birthday party-ish as opposed to wedding. This is where choosing your venue is important. Choose one that you don’t have to do a lot to in order to save on this.
* Think about your timing. Friday evenings and Sundays are less expensive and usually call for lower minimums.
* To help save on things like video, photo and dj, look at a place called Ariana Studios which does all of that and can give you a great all-inclusive package.
* Don’t be afraid to negotiate things. If you don’t ask for a discount or to lower the price, they won’t do it. If you don’t like something in a package, ask them how much it would lower your price if you took it out or are they willing to replace it?
