Planning An Outdoor Wedding In Metro Houston-Galveston, Texas

In Texas out door weddings are quite popular. There are many venues you might seek out if you are planning a outdoor wedding. First would be the location of the celebration of your vows. Locations such as your backyard, a neighborhood or subdivision park, a local beach, or a popular city or state park are some options. In the Houston area there are many such places that are excellent for your outdoor wedding:

1. Hermann or Memorial Park are excellent spots for outdoor weddings. At an outdoor wedding in the Park it will be witness usually by many people that usually ends after saying the I DOs with the crowd applauding and yahooing for the couple celebrating their wedding vows.

2. Backyard weddings are also very popular in the Houston area. A nice freshly cut & trimmed yard is a nice place to say your vows of committment to one another. Usually the celebration has a barbq pit all fired up and filled with good eats being cooked. There are several rental companies that can help in making this outdoor event simple or very fancy. Nothing is really required except a table for the minister to set up his alter and a number of folding chairs for the guests to sit in. But a rental company can also provide a wedding arch, tables, and cloth covered chairs. You can also hire a wedding musican for the ceremony, a DJ, or a band of the genre you prefer.  (Cost approximated: Minister $250, license to wed $45, musician $250-$750 depending on whom you select, food and beverages $250, rental of chairs, arch, etc $250). A very nice wedding can be had for around a $1000 especially if you are very budget conscience, yet it would be an everlasting memory for all that attend.

3. A Galveston Beach Wedding. These are some of my favorites. The Galveston Island State Park is a great place if the weather is agreeable. The pounding of the sea on the beach is an excellent background noise! Cost wise it’s the same as number 2. Not expensive yet a very memorable occassion. PLus in Galveston wedding are permitted on the Seawall and many are held at the Seawall Statue across form the San Luis Hotel. Moody Gardens also hosts weddings but the cost is 3-5 times that of a beach wedding and can be rather expensive, but it is a Most Beautiful place for outdoor weddings. The open beach at the San Luis Bridge is also a great spot to have your wedding officiated when the weather is beautiful. There are many other spots on the water in Galveston where a wedding may be officiated! Take a trip to Galveston, and do some sightseeing!

4. Gazebo Weddings! In the Houston Galveston Area there are many public and private Gazebos available. Some are free, but some hotels require you to stay in the hotel or pay a fee to rent the Gazebo for a wedding celebration. There are also several in the Galveston area. There is a beautiful Gazebo at the City of Rosenberg Park off Hwy 59 south. There are many subdivisions around Houston that have Gazebos with a small rental fee. These weddings also can be had for a total fee of around $600-$1000 for everything if you are thrifty, and yet provide a beautiful and lasting memory for all.

5. Country Club out door weddings. With multiple Country & Golf clubs in the Metro Houston-Galveston-Woodlands area these can turn out to be a most excellent place to hold your wedding but usually the price for the complete wedding will be 2-4x times higher, but you have the benefits of having a room to dress in and get prepared for the service. The Houston Equestrian Club in Katy, Texas also hosts weedings with an outdoor venue. This is also a great wedding spot. A Country Club out door wedding can be rather expensive if you want to go all out, with an Orchestra, a full course catered meal, flowers, and soveniers for the guests. But this is your weddings and you must decide on what you really want and desire in a celebration

6. Other locations include several restuarants in Houston that have Outdoor locations for weddings and other celebrations. prices on these can run from inexpensive to very expensive depending on your personal requirements;

Do I get my dress altered for heels or bare feet?

Hi, I just bought my shoes for my wedding and they are heels. I want to say 3 inch heels. We are having a barefoot ceremony on the beach, so I was wondering do I get my dress altered with my shoes on or off? I dont want to trip over it at the ceremony but I dont want it too short for the reception when i will be wearing my heels.

HELP!
I wear 3 inch heels all the time…I’ll be fine

Since you intend to spend a portion of your time barefoot, you get the dress altered for bare feet. Otherwise your dress will drag, you will trip on it, your guests will step on it, etc.

Edit: Sand stains? Seriously? Have you ever been to the beach and gotten something stained by having contact with the sand? Didn’t think so because it doesn’t happen.

Destination Weddings / Honeymoons – St Barts

Destination Weddings are weddings that take place away from where the bride and groom live. They happen in some of the most exotic and wonderful places in the world. These types of non-traditional weddings provide the bride and groom with dreamy settings, while doubling as an opportunity for guests to experience a place they have never been before.

“Today’s couples are more educated, sophisticated, and better traveled than couples of past generations. More affluent than past marrying couples, 27% of these Generation Y couples ( children of the baby boomers and twice the numbers ) will pay for their entire wedding, and they want something different for themselves and their guests; they want to be pampered and taken seriously.

In the year 2006, nine percent of weddings in the United States were destination

weddings, which is a 200% increase in the last ten years. Generation Y couples are tired of the “themed” weddings that became so prevalent and overused in the past. They want to experience different cultures and real settings rather than a “staged” wedding.”

“Although women are still the primary decision makers of the wedding plans, men are more involved today than couples of the generation that preceded them, 83% of today’s couples are employed full time; they work hard (they are paying a mortgage and own one or two automobiles between them). Equally, they want to play hard; realizing that they are together rarely, they want to plan events that will bring them closer. As well, they want to create deep and meaningful memories for the family and friends. Since most couples are not getting married in the areas where they grew up, their time with family and friends is all the more precious and important to them. If they can do this in a unique or even an exotic setting, all the more enticing,” Ernst adds.

St Barthelemy, located in the French West Indies, is that exotic setting today’s bride is looking for. It is the Monte Carlo of the Caribbean, without the traffic jams but with the added advantage of flawless beaches. Shortened to Saint Barth in French and St Barts in English it is an exclusive eight square mile (21 sq km) embodiment of 24-carat French chic. It attracts millionaires on luxury yachts, movie stars and French expatriates fleeing the European winter. It is a Caribbean island where relaxation and Gallic style under a tropical sun have been refined to perfection.

Few islands worldwide, can match the unique blend of style, nature and history that is St. Barts. This tiny island has significant appeal where ‘quality’ is most certainly more important than ‘quantity’… an island far away from the normality of life, making it the perfect wedding destination.

St. Barts is surrounded with turquoise waters, situated near the northern end of the Lesser Antilles group in the French West Indies. At a distance of 200 kms from the island of Guadeloupe and 25 kms from Saint-Martin. It is a mountainous island whose only flat area is occupied by the airport’s runway. As the climate is rather dry, agriculture has never been developed, thus throughout history few slaves had ever been employed. For the most part, St. Bartians are descendants of Breton and Norman fisher folk. Many are of French and Swedish ancestry, the latter evident in their fair skin, blond hair, and blue eyes.

St. Barts’ beaches are renowned for being some of the most beautiful and pristine in the world. Many are found in small coves, which have been protected from development by strict environmentally friendly zoning. Unlike many of its neighboring Caribbean islands, it has not been overrun with prefab condos and large chain hotels. There are six 4 star hotels all featuring romance packages for the wedding or honeymoon couple. All are of single story design, some as one building and others as separate single bedroom villas. Four are located on the beach (perfect for reading-of-the-vows ceremony) the other two are high on the hills with magnificent views of the island and setting sun. Each hotel has been uniquely designed, blending into the surrounding terrain. Luxury and elegance is felt in each environment.

St. Barts features some of the best cuisine in the Caribbean. The island has over eighty restaurants featuring culinary styles ranging from classic French to Asian to West Indian.

Many of the restaurants attract gourmet chefs trained in France to oversee their kitchens. These chefs can also be reserved to serve guests in the intimate privacy of their own villa for any special event or treasured evening. Villas on the island offer breath taking views and the perfect setting for your reception, especially with your own private French chef.

Nightlife of St. Barts is diverse as well. Visitors looking for late-night pleasures can listen to live jazz at a café or dance the night away at one of the local discos or after hours clubs.

St. Barts is also a duty-free port, rated as one of the premier shopping destinations in the Caribbean. The capital Gustavia is the principal shopping area of the island. There are boutiques and emporiums for the most sophisticated shoppers, featuring luxury brands such as Cartier, Hermes, Dior to name a few. The island hosts numerous health and beauty clinics and fitness centers catering to the island’s upscale clientele.

It is important to realize that planning a wedding in a foreign country still has the usual concerns and worries of any home based event; there is the additional stress that something could go wrong in a different location. Aside from making travel reservations for the group, a couple needs to consider local legal issues. For instance, marriage in St Barts is not a legal ceremony, rather it is viewed as a spiritual ceremony. For this reason and others, travelers planning to marry in any foreign country should give serious consideration to hiring a local, home based Wedding Consultant for guidance and advice as well as an on-site Wedding Consultant at the particular destination. .The on-site Consultant will insure that the hosts of the event have all the required documentation, that every detail is planned long before arrival and that only the most competent, professional and expert wedding vendors with proper contracts will provide their services . These on-site Consultants can also provide any needed assistance if the couple chooses to bring along some of their own vendors (e.g. the photographer, floral designer, videographer, etc.). They will check that each client and guest is properly retrieved at the airport, that they are provided with the planned-for-accommodations, and that they are well rested from travel before beginning the schedule of any local tours and sightseeing prepared for in advance. Moreover, the on-site consultant can also suggest local customs that will make the wedding truly unique, one that family and friends alike will talk about for a very long time.

“Premium IV is truly one of the foremost on-site specialists. Located on St Barts they are members of AFWPI (Association for Wedding Professionals International) and JWI (June Wedding, Inc®). The management team of Premium IV is made up of three experts in service: a successful Canadian entrepreneur, an English expert in receptive tourism and a French restaurateur who have provided magnificent service in the best restaurants and hotels in France, the UK, USA, and St Barts. Additionally, the highly qualified and bilingual staff (French and English) have many years of experience in the island way of life.

They will provide the ultimate in V.I.P. services. Premium IV has brought together, under one umbrella, only the best that St Barts has to offer. With over 120 contracted partners providing approximately 450 products and services. There is virtually no request that Premium IV cannot arrange,” says International Travel Writer, Jesse Nash.

Any special event wedding, honeymoon or other special event that takes place on St. Barts is special and memorable simply due to the Island’s own enchanted ambiance and unique hospitality. The St. Barts experience is all the more enhanced when it is under the direction of a competent Consultant and Director, at home and on the Island. A Consultant or Director who leaves nothing to chance, who sees to it that not only is the St. Barts experience itself magical, but also one that will be treasured forever in the hearts and memories of the travelers. The staff of Premium IV takes the added steps of communicating with the client and/or their home-based Consultant before arrival on St. Barts so that every detail is discussed and decisions are determined and firmed up in writing. From the moment the client and guests set foot on St. Barts, they enter into a well-scripted, stress-free atmosphere in which they will be completely at ease and confident that all the planning will play out like as closely as possible to their dreams.

Tips on Designing Bridesmaid Dresses For Beach Weddings

Many a bride has found that designing bridesmaid dresses present a challenge worth taking. You have to consider many factors like differences in skin tone, body and face shape as well as personality when designing a fairly uniform bridesmaid dress that will make all the bridesmaids happy. You will soon find that choosing your own bridal dress for your beach wedding was a breeze, pun intended, than choosing the bridesmaid dresses!

Fortunately, you can keep these helpful tips in mind when deciding on the bridesmaid dress that all your beautiful ladies in waiting can wear with smiles on their faces to rival the radiance of the sun during sunrises at the beach.

Weather Conditions

Depending on the location of your beach wedding, weather conditions will vary. For example, if you get married in Florida, you can either experience a subtropical climate or a true tropical climate depending on what region of the Sunshine State you are in. And there is also a difference between being married on the lakefront and on the riverfront.

Thus, you must design the bridesmaid dresses according to the prevailing weather in the wedding locale. If you get married during the autumn, be sure to include wraps to shield your bridesmaids for the cold. If you tie the knot in summer, then tube tops and spaghetti straps are excellent ideas.

Dress Construction

The bridesmaid dresses must be made of materials that are breathable, skim the body gracefully and present a picture of ethereal beauty. Ideal textiles for this purpose usually include cotton blends, silk, satin and chiffon. Rich fabrics such as wool and velvet have absolutely no place in a beach wedding!

Also, you have to ensure that the dress construction allows for the abovementioned ideal textiles to flow smoothly over the bridesmaids’ figures. Think of the images of sea goddesses rising out of the sea with their flowing garments moving with the wind and you get the idea – no stiff corsets and whalebone skirts please!

Beach-y Length

Have mercy on your bridesmaids. Their bridesmaids’ dresses must allow them freedom of movement in the sand and sea. Of course, they are not expected to take a dip but at least they should be able to walk without restraint on the soft sandy beach!

Thus, the length of the bridesmaid dress must be ankle-length at most. Knee-length is ideal although you also have to take into consideration the wind conditions as you don’t want your bridesmaids to be holding on to their skirts to prevent peep shows from happening. Not everybody wants to be Marilyn Monroe, after all.

Minimal Embellishments

When it comes to beach weddings, the less embellishments on the dress, the better. You have to avoid formal details like beadings and sequins because these do not belong on the beach. Instead, opt for natural-looking embellishments like thin ribbons and subtle lace overlays, maybe even a corsage instead of a bouquet.

Again, designing bridesmaid dresses present a challenge for most brides. But with beach weddings less formal and more casual, your life as a bride will become so much easier.

WAYS TO START YOUR OWN DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHIC BUSINESS! (Part Six)

Your own digital, photography based, home business could start here. . .

*  PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTICLES.  This involves a bit of writing. You can write about the photograph, or use a photo to illustrate your article. This market is changing too, instead of having to be a recognised journalist, you can now supply the market. A lot of web based news mags welcome material from its viewers, as do tv companies, well known manufacturers. The whole are of reporting has changed. Which means more opportunity for you.

*  COMPETITIONS.  You can not only make money here but win lots of cool stuff. There are professional competition entrants out there who have won lots of cash, holidays and loads of other stuff. Why, because they are always entering. Good thing is these days its all online, you don’t have to carry a ton of magazines back from the newsagent! Get cracking.

*  PORTRAIT.   Here is another lucrative market. Family portraits, babies, pets. Don’t forget to offer ‘paintings’ on canvas!  A mobile portrait service is a good idea, not only for families, but businesses too, sporting arenas, car shows, motorcycle shows, the beach. Instant portrait service!

*  RESTORING.  Old cracked and grainy photographs can be given a new lease of life when scanned in to a computer. A lot of people have these photos of old relatives in drawers and cupboards that they would like to pass on to younger family members. Make old memories new for your customers. Advertise in supermarkets, shops, over fifty press, they are out there.

*  BUSINESS EXTERIORS.   Go into any hotel, restaurant or bar and you will see a photograph on the wall. With your computer you can offer much more than just a straight photograph. Any artistic interpretation that you want, printed on any number of speciality paper. From canvas to film, from metal to silk. I’m sure you could come up with something striking that lends itself to your subject.

*  GUIDES.   Another writing/photographing assignment. Do you know good walks, cycling routes, good places to fish? Is there anything historical near you? Lots of guide books and travel writers in the bookshop. Take a bus trip, take pictures and write a few words. Offer it to local shops at a discount, or on sale or return. Or offer it online for a download.

*  AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY.  I don’t mean flying in a plane, but good aerial shots can be gotten using other methods. Cameras are lighter and better now, most do video, its easy to run through video now frame by frame and print out individual scenes. Kites, model aeroplanes and helicopters, helium filled balloons, rockets. There are numerous ways to get a camera into the sky, you may have a lot of editing to do, but it will be worth it to find that great view. People, businesses buy aerial shots. Artistic skyscapes are unusual subject matter.

*  MAGAZINES.  There are so many magazines on the shelves now, from general subjects to specific interests. Do any of them interest you? You can submit photos and or short stories to any of them. Find out how they like their submissions to be made and submit away. Try the smaller magazines first, where the competition may be a little easier.

*  NEWSPAPERS.  As above search out the publication you feel an affinity to and then search out stories. Check out the local press for ideas, follow up on quirky or unusual stories, redo them in your own style and with your own photos and submit them to national papers, or online agencies.

*  BOOKS. Books need illustrations and don’t forget with a computer and some software you are not limited in what you can provide. Check out the book market, see what books appeal and start creating fantasy images that could illustrate the cover of the latest science fiction masterpiece. Someone does it, why can’t it be you?

This is just to get your creative juices going and your brain storming with ideas! The internet has opened up a never ending need for images, of anything and everything. Stock photography has changed, gone are the highly professional, large format shots of models and beaches, that had to be technically perfect, well they are not gone, but they are not the only opportunities for aspiring photographers who want to make a living with their hobby, their passion. Images that you would’nt believe started life as a photograph end up everywhere these days and the ability to transform these images is available to everyone, and in the comfort of their own home.

Don’t forget a lot of well known high street businesses started life on a kitchen table, why not yours?

Caribbean Destination Wedding Planning Tips

Have you decided that you want a Caribbean destination wedding, as opposed to a wedding at home? If so, you will need to make many plans. To get started, please continue reading on for a few helpful destination wedding planning tips.

Research your options. Before deciding on a destination wedding in the Caribbean, it is important to research. Of course, find affordable airline reservations and overnight accommodations, but look beyond that. For example, some all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica give you a free standard wedding ceremony. In most cases, very few restrictions are involved, such as a 5 or 7 day stay.

Make wedding plans. As previously stated, some all-inclusive Jamaica resorts give you a free wedding. If you opt for these resorts, be sure to make your plans in advance and ensure you get a picture perfect wedding, even if it is free. If you opt for a separate wedding venue, make these plans well in advance and keep up-to-date on progress and changes.

Reexamine your decision. Make sure you are making the right choice. If you change your mind, you can still use your Caribbean reservations for your honeymoon. You may, however, run into problems with guests. For that reason, reaffirm your decision to get married in the Caribbean before telling friends and family.

Tell your family. As soon as you decide on a destination wedding, tell your family. Do you have a mother who is excited about your engagement and wants to help you plan? If so, she may get started right away. Don’t give her the opportunity to be disappointed. When telling your family, know ahead of time if you want to invite guests.

Decide on a date. When deciding on a wedding date, give time. Most of your guests will want to attend, but some may need to save money first. If you want someone special to attend, such as a best friend, give them word of your plans before the official invite arrives in the mail. Also, make sure you and all guests have time to order and receive passports.

Make your travel plans. Once you decide on a date, it is important to check availability. With a large selection of Caribbean resorts to choose from, you should not have a problem getting a reservation. With that said, if you opt for a resort with a free wedding included, double check availability before providing guests with a specific date.

Decide who to invite. When planning a Caribbean wedding, you will face a tough decision in terms of guests. Who do you want to invite? Most want to keep their destination weddings small. Also, consider finances, but fairness. Not sending an invite to one aunt, but the rest because you assume she cannot afford is tricky. Send the invite and let her decide.

Inform guests. You will want to tell immediate family members in person first, but everyone else can receive a destination wedding invitation. As previously stated, destination wedding invitations should be sent at least two months in advance.

Order invitations. For the invitations themselves, you can use a standard wedding invitation or opt for a theme. Most online and local retailers have a large selection of destination wedding invitations available for sale. Announce your wedding plans with a beautiful beach scenery in the background.

Include travel information. In addition to a destination wedding invite, you should include other information. Although optional, consider giving guests information on travel. If you already booked your travel arrangements or researched options, you may know what airline reservations and Caribbean resorts have the best deals. Share this with your guests, as they will appreciate the tips.

Consider your plans. When extending Caribbean all-inclusive resort recommendations, keep your travel plans in mind. Most guests will not just travel for your wedding and leave; they will stay and have a vacation themselves. If you intend to honeymoon too, opt for a nearby hotel or resort. You want to enjoy your honeymoon, not turn around and see a family member every step you take.

Discuss at-home plans with family. Whether you have a number of guests that cannot attend your Caribbean wedding or if you don’t want to invite guests, discuss arrangements at home with your family. With Caribbean weddings, some couples do not get a big reception, but that is something that can be done later at home.

A Rose for Emily: Memorializing the Anniversary of William Faulkner’s Death

July 6, 2009 marks the forty-seventh anniversary of William Faulkner’s death. Although the date of someone’s demise isn’t the kind of thing we typically celebrate (what, no piñatas?), we must remember that Faulkner’s writing relied heavily on themes of death and decay, and that he would never have us flinch in the face of his – or anyone else’s – mortality.

What Faulkner would have us flinch in the face of, apparently, was his writing, which teems with convoluted plots, impossibly long sentences, classical allusions, time shifts, narrator shifts, and a really, really – what’s it called? – big vocabulary. (Hemingway famously criticized: “Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words? He thinks I don’t know all the ten-dollar words. I know them all right.” Uh huh. Sounds like someone’s got a case of word envy.) Throw all that on top of the fact that Faulkner’s Southern Gothic writing is teeming with dark humor, morbidity, grotesque characters, and undercurrents of racism and bigotry, and you don’t exactly end up with the kind of novel you read at the beach. (Just two Nobel Prizes in literature.)

If you’re looking for something with which to honor the man on his death-day, you might try the significantly more manageable “A Rose for Emily.” This gothic short story is all about social convention, alienation, forbidden love, murder, and some seriously macabre romantic preferences. Think “Twilight,” minus all the sex. (We hope.)

True to style, this story begins at a funeral. A lighthearted yet thought-provoking funeral followed by four weddings? Not a chance. The year is around 1930, and the funeral is being held for Miss Emily Grierson, an aged Southern belle whose overbearing father crippled her chances of ever having a normal love life. Flashback to the 1890’s: when Emily’s father finally bites the dust, leaving his 30-year-old spinster daughter with a house but no money, Emily sequesters herself in her room for three days before admitting he has passed. Taking pity on her situation, the townspeople decide to exempt her from paying any further taxes. Life goes back to normal and Emily sticks with what she does best: living as a shut-in. That is, until a fun-loving but potentially shiesty Northerner named Homer Barron comes to town and is seen driving around with her. The wild speculation begins. Are they getting married? Are they breaking up? Have they gotten back together? Is he gay? No, seriously, is he gay? Because it’s Mississippi in the 1890’s here, people.

Interestingly, when Homer tries to leave Emily (who has just been buying arsenic) and is last seen entering her house, all the speculation seems to stop. In fact, when the weird smell appears, the townspeople kindly sprinkle lime all around the house. No questions asked. (In all fairness, he was a Northerner.) For the next thirty-something years – with the exception of a several-year stint in which the young ladies go to her house for painting lessons – Emily lives out her life in complete solitude. And then dies, bringing our story full-circle. With Emily’s funeral out of the way, the townspeople can finally go inside the house and investigate. And what awaits them there in the bed of the bridal chamber? It’s none other than Homer Barron, naturally! (Very naturally, in fact. Think processes-of-nature naturally.) But wait, we haven’t even gotten to the real Hallmark moment yet! Next to Homer’s lovingly-arranged corpse is a pillow – still bearing the indentation mark of recent use – with one of Emily’s long, gray hairs on it.

So as you can see, the idea of celebrating William Faulkner’s death-day isn’t particularly morbid after all. What’s most important is that – just as with his writing – we are able to maintain enough presence of mind that the dark and disgusting parts don’t distract us from the larger message. What, then, is “A Rose for Emily” really about? You could argue that it’s an allegory for the slow process of modernization in the South. After all, the aging Miss Emily endures painfully in a town where she has long-since outlived her usefulness – a fact which is mirrored in the cyclical structure of a story that just can’t seem to let her go. With her, she brings the unburied ghosts of the past into the present, forcing her peers to relive their own dark history. (We let our children take painting lessons from WHOM?!)

Or, you could be a little more general and go with Faulkner’s claim that it’s about “the simple things which all human beings want.” You know, if that’s what you’re into.
